Believe it or not, companies are making bulletproof vests from hemp. We all know that the hemp fiber is super strong, and it’s even known to be stronger than steel. So, I guess this doesn’t come as a surprise. They, of course, use other compounds to treat the hemp, so that it’s more comfortable and thicker. But overall, hemp bulletproof vests seem to be much lighter than the regular ones. So, they are great for army personnel, especially those on the battlefield carrying all their supplies.

Hemp is now being tested and developed as an alternative to Kevlar. Hemp is a lighter, more flexible, and more sustainable material. The current technology is coating the already remarkable hemp fibers in an enzyme solution to make them even stronger and softer. The only thing lift to do is bring the price down. At the moment, hemp vests are too new to the market to have costs low. But with time, popularity will grow, which will be better for the environment and wallets.

Before answering this, if I told you hemp was just as strong as kevlar, steel, and fiberglass, this sets the scene quite nicely for the response to this question! Yes, you can make a bulletproof vest from hemp; in fact, it’s already been done by a company located in The Netherlands in Europe.

Can a bulletproof vest be made from hemp fibers? The answer is yes, not only is hemp known to be ten times stronger than steel, but it is also a lightweight material making ideal for a bulletproof vest. Bulletproof vests made from hemp have already been produced in the Netherlands, and we are seeing more companies leaning towards this material rather than Kevlar.

I would think I theory, yes, but I am having a hard time wrapping my head around a plant being bullet-resistant.

Hemp has been proven to be durable than most other known products and resources, so there’s that.

I mean, it should work – I just don’t want to have to be the first one to try it.

Get bulletproof warriors! The bulletproof hemp vest is one of the most expert and wise outcomes of hemp discovery, which is appreciated for the less weight of vest that police officers should wear during they chase and run missions! A regular bulletproof vest weighs about 31 pounds!

      It’s possible to make one.

A Redditor described making one out of a hempcrete-like substance, and that worked pretty well.

He used bio-resin instead of lime as a binder.

It seems it would be lighter than kevlar, but maybe not quite as resistant.

Yes. Bulletproof vests can be made out of hemp fiber. A company in Amsterdam manufactured a bulletproof jacket made out of hemp that was even tested with 0.22, 9 millimeters, and 0.357 magnum bullets. The bulletproof jacket was rated at level II-A respectably. It is an advantage to use as a body armor because it is lighter than steel or Kevlar.

In a sense, yes. Kevlar isn’t bulletproof rather bullet-resistant since it is the outer layer of the vest. The actual bulletproof part is what lays within the vast plates of metal. So, hemp would be a great alternative to Kevlar since it is cheaper, stronger, and wicks moisture away better than many materials.

Yes! Although it’s still not super common to find such ballistics vests in the United States, foreign manufacturers have begun to dabble in this arena. If you ascribe to the “conspiracies” around the prohibition of hemp, you may find it interesting to know that Kevlar was developed and patented in the 60s by DuPont…

Hemp composites are equally strong (and sometimes test as much stronger) than a regular Kevlar, glass, or composite bulletproof style vest. Resin is used along with the hemp, so the hemp vests are much more comfortable, lighter, and less expensive than the other kinds.
