To shuck hemp seeds, you need to smash them, dip them in water and shift all the seeds form the casings. Because they are so small, it is recommended you have them laid out in an even, single layer, take a board and hit the board with a mallet to break the shells. Collect all the seeds into a bowl and mix in cold water to separate the seeds from the casings. Then shift the seeds from the water and keep in an airtight container.

The best way to hull hemp seeds is to submerge them in water and then stir vigorously. All the shells will float to the surface of the water and can be removed. Any hemp seeds that are still shelled should then be cracked with a mallet. The hulls of hemp seed are crunchy and are a high dose of fiber.

Begin by pouring the seeds into a bucket of room temperature water. Mix the seeds around vigorously, using lots of strength! This will separate the shells of the seeds from the seeds themselves, and the shells will float on top of the water. The seeds, being heavier, will sink to the bottom of the bucket. When you’re done stirring, skim the empty hulls (shells) from the top of the water. If any seeds still have their shells, you can crack them individually with a hammer, a mallet, or a nutcracker.
