Hemp plastics come from the hemp stalks. You can make plastic products from the cellulose in the hemp stalks. Since hemp is the most significant cellulose producer – up to 85% of the stalks are cellulose – it is an excellent resource for plastic production. Henry Ford developed his first fenders and doors from hemp and other plant-based materials. He knew how strong and easy it was to make car parts out of hemp, but with the 1937 marijuana tax act, then making marijuana illegal, Henry had to move from hemp to settle for his car parts. Hemp fibers are broken down and molded into whatever product you want. The best part is all you need is hemp and water to make hemp plastics.

Molding cellulose fibers make hemp plastic. Hemp plastic has not been used as often as expected simply due to its high cost. Hemp plastic is expensive to produce because of the prohibition period of cannabis plants. Due to the restrictions, the industrial machinery required to process hemp plastic is not as available as that used to make plastic from fossil fuels.

For instance, an Australian company proposes a cellulose-based plastic material contrived by their trademark using its unique process, including hemp. Using their techniques, cellulose fibers are converted into mouldable material, which has a notably high industrial strength for an unlimited variety of products.

Plastics start with cellulose, usually taken from petroleum, but bioplastics use cellulose from corn, soy, or hemp. Toxic petrochemical mixtures aren’t the only way to make plastic, but the process of making plastic from hemp has several patented systems from different companies. But here is how to make hemp plastic. Hemp plastic is made by converting cellulose fibers into a moldable material. Hemp plastic is biodegradable and extremely durable. The reason hemp plastic is not as common is due to the cost it takes in producing it. Fossil fuels provide what is needed to make plastic naturally, whereas it has to be extracted from hemp.

The cellulose fibers in hemp are converted to a moldable material. It can be mixed with other plastics, natural or synthetic. Natural polymers mixed with hemp include shellac, tar, shellac, tortoiseshell, and tree resins. They use inorganic fillers like mica, talc, or fiberglass.

I’ve looked for some time for a step-by-step on hemp bioplastics, but I guess each company is a bit protective of their industry knowledge. There are different types of hemp bioplastic, ranging from the “hemp-infused”–where hemp fibers are added to a typical plastic solution, which then uses less plastic. There is also plastic made from only hemp cellulose and other organic material. I know that’s probably not as well-rounded as an answer as you were hoping for, but it’s the best I can do!
