Industrial hemp is the only legal way to grow hemp under the FARMS Bill of 2018. The FARMS Bill made it legal to grow hemp for industrial use nationwide. This means that hemp can only be grown in significant qualities by licensed companies. The hemp has to be processed into some product to be sold.

Industrial hemp is a mixture of the cannabis Sativa plant that is grown exclusively for industrial purposes. Industrial hemp is grown for use in everyday products such as clothing, building materials, or to be manufactured as wood, unlike the hemp that is cultivated for medicinal or recreational use. Hemp is popular because it is one of the fastest-growing biomasses on the planet.

Industrial hemp, which we sometimes refer to just as “hemp,” was grown as a commodity fiber crop in the US. It originated as one of the first plants to be spun into fiber 50,000 years ago. Since then, we’ve grown this variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species specifically for the industrial uses of its derived products. That’s where it gets the name “industrial hemp.”
